My interest in photography ranges from capturing movement and the manner in which this can be portrayed as an image, to capturing the details of everyday life such as objects that may seem insignificant but collectively make up the ‘Metropolis’, which focuses on everyday life. Within this topic, I have explored methods of capturing the ‘texture’ of the city. By using wide depth of field, I can show the roughness of a brick and juxtapose it with the smoothness of a tile (refer to photograph 14).
By varying the colours and lighting a mood can easily be staged; from a mysterious atmosphere such as on image 12 where the directional lighting has caused the facial features to be obscured; to image 05 where the brighter light displaying a wider array of colours and thus creating a happier mood.
I have manipulated the scenario of certain images above by realising that the subject does not need to be taken entirely for it to imply a mood; sometimes hiding certain aspects makes the viewer take more notice of the details, and allows them to interpret the mood of the image in their own personal way (refer to photograph 13 as an example).
I hope to be able to continue experimenting at Higher Education, and expand on the techniques I have already gained in order to begin to develop a clearer understanding of my individual style. I wish to continue exploring the ways in which the layers of a city such movement of people, people themselves and organisation of levels such as buildings, all interlink and create such an interest complexity and how I can portray this in a still image. I want to discover various types of photography and allow myself the freedom to investigate the creative route that I am comfortable with, and I hope that if given the chance to do so at Manchester Metropolitan, I can successfully achieve this.
